What is the best scanning resolution for displaying on my T.V.?
If you have a standard T.V. set then the image doesn't need to be very big at all.
High Definition T.V.s come in two versions (at the moment) one has a screen size of 1280x720 and the other has a screen size of 1920 x 1080. Only you will know what is the correct size of your T.V.
So what size should you scan at?
A scan of a standard sized print (6x4) at 300dpi comes out at 1800 x 1200 approx.
You will notice that the depth is greater than the depth (1200) of the scan is deeper than the T.V. so this means that even at only 300dpi you will have a scan that is bigger than you actually need.
Of course the HDTV is widescreen but the vast majority of photos are not so the picture will not fill the full width of the T.V.
A scan of a 35mm slide at only 2000dpi would give a result that is 2700x1800 which is more than adequate for even most big T.V.s (we scan at 2400dpi at least - unless by special request).
Now if you wanted your photos to fit the full width you would need to scan at a resolution that would give you a wide enough picture (300dpi would do most but not the biggest) and then crop the image to suit.
I hope this all makes sense. The answer in 99% of the cases is scan at 300dpi for prints or 2400dpi for slides.
