Photo Preservation

(see other photo/slide scanning options here)

Why should I bother to get my photos scanned to disk?

  • Photos deteriorate with time and are liable to get damaged whereas once scanned to disk they can be preserved as if they were taken yesterday.
  • Scanning often allows faded photos to be restored as part of the scanning process.
  • Photos are not just pictures but they capture memories - often of people - who should not be forgotton. Who we are today is largely down to those who came before us.
  • Family history is important and new generations always enjoy seeing their ancestors. Your great, great grandchildren might enjoy seeing pictures of you.
  • Photos of ordinary people doing ordinary things are like golddust to historians - we have a duty to safeguard these images.
  • Photos on disk can easily be duplicated allowing family members and friends to have their own copies.
  • Digital photos can be printed cheaply and easily (we can arrange this for you as well).
  • Photos on disk can be used in many ways e.g. digital photo frames, slide shows, played on DVD player, etc.
  • Photos on a CD or DVD can be easily stored and preserved for future generations.

Why should I get you to scan my photos to disk?

  • We take a little extra care - especially with precious photos. We have experience scanning everything from old prints through 100 year old glass negatives right through to modern slides.
  • We use professional equipment to scan your photos producing results far superior to all cheap scanners. Quality should count when you are preserving photos for future use.
  • Unless you intend to scan many thousands of pictures it's cheaper to get your photos scanned by us than doing it yourself.
  • Scanning using cheap non-professional equipment takes a very long time to do - we can do it far quicker and with better results. If you scan your own pictures it will take you many, many hours to complete, time you could use in much better ways.
  • Scanning is a very technical process that requires experience to be successful. We have the experience that makes the difference.
  • We take great care over every scan we produce so we can get the very best results from the photos we scan to disk.

What should I do to preserve the photos after they are scanned?

  • Avoid extremes in temperatures and extreme changes in temperature (often found in lofts and basements).
  • Avoid touching the photos with anything - no paperclips, staples, etc.
  • Never write with a ballpoint or hard pencil on the back of a photo.
  • Never store your photos in cheap albums (especially those with sticky pages).
  • Store negatives in a different place to your prints - that way if one is damaged the other is preserved.
  • There is an interesting page of advice at about.com (link opens in new window)
